1.1 What do I need to file a patent application online?

If you want to file a patent application online you will need:
  • a smart card and a smart card reader*
  • a PC with internet access
* The smart card must be activated before use. Also, it must be inserted in the reader before clicking on the “Open new online filing (CMS)” link.
The smart card must remain inserted at all times when using the new online filing (CMS) application.
Note: the smart card will only work if your Gemalto software is up to date.

A starter kit containing a smart card, smart card reader and information material can be obtained from the EPO free of charge.

To order your starter kit, go to New online filing (CMS). Then follow the prompts to register and submit your data.

Your smart card will be sent to you in around four weeks.


Once you have enrolled online for a smart card you will receive an e-mail containing your enrolment form.
Please print this form out, check your data, sign the form and return it to the address shown on the form.

Next, you have to register for the new online filing (CMS) application.
