2.1 Which search terms can I enter? (2/2)

  • Priority date:
    This is the date of first filing of the first application. More information can be found in the European Patent Convention, Art. 87.
  • Applicant:
    The natural or legal person (ie individual or company) who files a European patent application is called the applicant. Several applicants may file a European patent application together. Their names are all listed in Register Plus.
  • Inventor:
    The inventor is the person who has made the invention. There may be more than one inventor. Their names are all listed in Register Plus. More information about the designation of the inventor can be found in the European Patent Convention, Art. 81.
  • Representative:
    The representative is the person who represents the applicant before the European Patent Office. An applicant may be represented by more than one person. Their names are all listed in Register Plus. More information about professional representatives can be found in the European Patent Convention, Art. 134.
  • Opponent:
    The opponent is an individual or company who files an opposition to a granted patent with the European Patent Office. There may be more than one opponent. Their names are all listed in Register Plus.
  • Classification (IPC):
    All patent applications are classified under the International Patent Classification system (IPC). This hierarchical system makes it easier to retrieve information because it divides all areas of technology into classes and subclasses. The complete IPC (current 8th edition) can be found on the website of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
