Applicant

The applicant is one or more persons or organisations (company, university, etc.), which are registered as the proprietor of a patent application.

The applicant format for an individual person is made up of the family name followed by the given name(s).

You are advised to enter the applicant's names using a phrase search, i.e. using the family name and given name(s) between quotation marks, as in "Smith John". This will retrieve only those documents in which the exact phrase is present.

Alternatively, applicant numbers (i.e. numbers assigned to applicants by the EPO) can be used for the search.

The applicant format for an organisation is made up of all the words of the name of that organisation.

The format for an organisation if made up of all the words of the name of the organisation.

You are advised to enter the applicant's name using a phrase search, i.e. using the organisation's name between quotation marks, as in "smithkline beecham". This will retrieve only those documents in which the exact phrase is present.

Applicant: Smith George - Retrieves all patent applications with the word "Smith" and the word "George" in the Applicant field.

Applicant: "Smith George" - Retrieves all patent applications with the exact phrase "Smith George" in the Applicant field.

Note: The Boolean operator AND is used implicitly in this field. For example, Smith John translates to Smith AND John.
